if you are one of the few handful of people who can truly play a mesmer effectively, then go ahead and make one.

if you are not one of those people, then don't bother.

There is a something the mesmer do better: crazy things.

Signet of illusions was a blessing for that.. I use it for everything. For farming, for UW runs.. with mesmer skills, ele skills, pve-only skills, monk skills, etc. . For example, with SoI you can summon at the same time 2 vanguards sins and one Ice Imp, all level 21, without even bothering to grind the titles.

A Necro is sooo boring compared to a Mesmer.

No, and here's why:

Ever want to join a group? Guess you'll have to be a loner since you're a mez and no one wants a mez. Why get someone who's a mez when heroes do the same thing, but better & faster.

If you want to be a mez, be one in PvP ONLY.

Speaking the TRUTH & from experience, take it from my side:
"Why is there a mez in this town? Haven't those ppl realized that the only reason we want mezzes is to interrupt and heroes do that better? Next target!"

That's the cold, honest TRUTH, believe it or not. Enemies die too fast in PvE to use any of the mez's skills other than as a secondary. The only good primary for the mez is interruption w/ its fast casting and like I said above, heroes do it better. Save the mez for PvP and PvP only.

You probably won't want one for pve like many said. For the areas you might want human help on you'll not likely get into a group. Those areas are usually the elite mission or dungeon-type areas. The problem with getting into PUGs is there's only the tank, nuke, monk, SS mentality for pretty much all missions/dungeons. It's so effective no one wants anything else.

It is wrong to say heroes do everything better than a player though, timing interruption is the exception. Who, what, when are always better decided human side. Interruption isn't the only thing a mesmer can do either. There's plenty of other things mesmers can do effectively. It's pve, you know the situation, build for it.

Also, I like being the only unique looking character around. There's almost no chance of seeing an exact twin, well for the men.

If you want to play a profession that is inferior in PvE, will not get accepted in pugs (who cares, pugs suck), and takes skill to play, make a mesmer. If not, go with something else.

It's true! It took me a lot of meditation under waterfalls and late night studying to truly understand the skill required to cast backfire on the casters, empathy on the melees, and interrupt skills.

I hear a lot of new players backfire the warriors, try to interrupt themselves, and then err7 trying to cast empathy.

Well, I'd say that is true when you need to PuG a lot.
In a decent guild/alliance it's not that hard to get into a group.

I don't consider this a valid argument.
If you'd say that a human interrupt ranger was preferable in most situations I'd agree.
But stating heroes > mesmer is the same as stating heroes > human player.
Which, with the right builds, would probably apply to more than 75% of the PvE population.

However, the real question is if it really matters.
I think not. A lot of players play for titles now, limiting them to one or two professions. So when forming a group, you won't have the possibility to pick the professions and bars you like, you have to do with the available players and the professions they can/will play.
So teams will probably not be the best they could have been.
Adding an experienced player (on whatever profession, including mesmer and assassin) would benefit. It's only when looking at fully optimized teams that the mesmer has no/very limited role in it.

Really, now isn't that funny. I have never had trouble getting into groups with my mesmer. Guess your just unlucky.

no never make a pve mesmer GW was originally made for PVP which is why some classes are only good in PVP mesmers have poor pve capabilities and can only run crappy gimmick builds mesmers are overall bad choice in pve make a better choice that will give you more benefiet like a warrior or an elementalist. farming capabilities and very versatile and needed in a team.

....What are we all talking about? Here's your answer: go play one, and find out for yourself.

I consider the Mesmer one of the most unique and dangerous classes in Guild Wars. But that doesn't mean I can tell you if they're worth it or not. This is like what my Monk has to go through with Rits. Monks are useless, I can outheal you, you have crappy skills! /rolleyes... and then they die, and I carry the rest of the party by myself. But that's just me.

Anyway. Date the class, if you will. Don't let anyone tell you if a profession is "worth it" or not, especially not me.

Yeah, they're worth it. They're really fun, but it comes with a lot of frustration.

soul reaping > fast casting in PvE
fast casting > soul reaping (if not in gimmick builds) in PvP

the handfull of usefull mesmer skills in PvE are better be placed on an other profession.

before I deleted my mesmer, my favorite mesmer would be Mantra of Recovery, Necrosis, Clumsiness and some energy-management skills (Auspicious Incantation)
